Air Force video reveals X-37B space plane landing

The U.S. Air Force's robotic X-37B space plane came back to Earth Saturday after 15 months in orbit on a mystery mission, and its much-anticipated landing was caught on video.

The X-37B spacecraft touched down at California's Vandenberg Air Force Base at 5:48 a.m. local time Saturday (8:48 a.m. EDT; 1248 GMT). Several hours later, Vandenberg officials released a short video of the event (seen above).

The first part of the 80-second video was apparently shot in infrared light. It shows the X-37B space plane cruising in for an automated landing, its belly and nose glowing a bright orange-yellow, presumably from the heat generated during re-entry to Earth's atmosphere.

The video switches over to visible wavelengths about 35 seconds in, after the space plane has touched down, and shuts off shortly after the X-37B rolls to a stop on the runway. [Photos: Air Force's 2nd Secret X-37B Mission]

The X-37B, also known as Orbital Test Vehicle-2 (OTV-2), launched on March 5, 2011, from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Its flight was the second-ever mission for the X-37B program; the first was flown by OTV-2's sister ship, OTV-1.

OTV-1 blasted off in April 2010 and stayed aloft for 225 days, well below the supposed 270-day orbital limit for the space plane. But OTV-2 smashed that limit, zipping around our planet for 469 days before finally coming down today.

Just what OTV-2 was doing up there for so long remains a mystery. Details of the vehicle's mission are classified, as are its payloads. The secrecy has spurred speculation ? notably from China ? that the X-37B may be a space weapon of some sort, but Air Force officials have long insisted that the spacecraft is simply testing out technologies for future satellites.

The X-37B looks like NASA's recently retired space shuttle, but it's far smaller. The X-37B is 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed. For comparison, two X-37B vehicles could fit inside the payload bay of a space shuttle.?

The 11,000-pound (5,000-kilogram) space plane's orbital longevity is enabled by its solar array, which generates power after deploying from the payload bay.

The X-37B is built by Boeing, though NASA originally used the vehicle as an experimental test bed until funding for the project ran out in 2004. The space plane then passed to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and it was ultimately turned over to the Air Force in 2006.

PARIS (AP) ? Back-room deals, black lists and bitter duels. Political and personal intrigue has wormed its way into Sunday's final round of French legislative elections. President Francois Hollande's Socialist Party is battling to ensure a solid majority and fulfill his vows to boost growth in Europe and redefine the presidency as one beholden to the people.

Barring surprises, the Socialists and their allies should win enough seats to control the crucial 577-seat lower house of parliament, after a strong showing in the first round a week ago. To get there, the party is trying to fend off conservatives who dominated parliament under former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

They're also trying to shame those in the mainstream right who are cutting vote-getting deals with the extreme right, anti-immigrant National Front, which is conniving for its first real presence in parliament in more than a quarter century.

"The right no longer knows where it lives. It no longer knows what it is," said Economy Minister Pierre Moscovici this week on France 2 TV. "It's lost its markers, its identity, its values."

One unexpected hitch for the Socialists flew straight out of Hollande's most inner circle: His live-in companion's tweet this week in support of a dissident candidate in western France, a not-so-subtle attack on the Socialist Party's official candidate ? the president's ex-partner and mother of his four children, Segolene Royal.

Royal is portrayed in the French press as the nemesis of a jealous Valerie Trierweiler, whose tweet on Tuesday upended the image Hollande has been trying to project: that of a "normal" leader intent on keeping the public and private spheres separate.

That stance is meant to set Hollande apart from the brash Sarkozy, who grabbed headlines with his complicated private life while building up a presidency that critics said was too centered on his own personality and his rich friends' interests. Hollande defeated him in the May 6 presidential vote, amid voter frustrations with Sarkozy's handling of the economy and the presidency.

The tweet also dealt a blow to Royal, whose chances of winning her parliamentary race were already shaky. Polls suggest that Royal, a former presidential candidate, will lose to dissident Socialist Olivier Falorni by a wide margin, a defeat that would leave her without a job in politics.

Far more grave is the perception that the moral ramparts built to ensure that the anti-immigration National Front remains a political pariah are being chinked away by conservative politicians. Sarkozy's conservative UMP party is struggling to hold onto seats, and many candidates are angling for far-right votes to defy polls and win.

Polling firms have calculated the National Front could get up to three seats in the National Assembly, a symbolic victory. The party's leader, Marine Le Pen ? who is running in a former coal mining region in northern France ? says one seat would be a victory since the party hasn't had a real parliamentary presence since 1986. In that year, 35 lawmakers were elected under a voting system that favors smaller parties ? but the system was abolished two years later. Le Pen thinks pollsters underestimate the National Front's potential.

The newly robust anti-immigration party, which wants to abandon the euro currency and stop immigration, is on a roll. Le Pen has revamped the party to bury its reputation as racist and anti-Semitic inherited under the reign of party founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen. Daughter Marine placed a solid third in spring presidential elections and its candidates ranked third in last Sunday's first round of parliamentary voting.

Sarkozy has disappeared into the shadows but he and his Union for a Popular Movement, or UMP, are being blamed for blurring the lines between the mainstream and extreme right by taking up some National Front themes, including the need to preserve France's national identity or try to ensure a low profile for Muslims.

Socialist Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault accuses the conservatives of creating a "strategic alliance" with the National Front.

"There is no alliance," UMP leader Jean-Francois Cope said in an interview published Friday in the daily Le Figaro.

"The French must understand that if the left gets all the power Sunday, it's like signing a blank check for five years," Cope said.

The Socialist Party already controls the Senate and most regional and local governments, and adversaries say the majority it expects on Sunday would amount to a "Socialist state" in France.

Any candidate who won support of more than 12.5 percent of registered voters in the first round advances to Sunday's runoff, and many districts have three-way races, including several with National Front candidates.

Nadine Morano, a former Sarkozy minister battling for a parliamentary seat in the eastern Moselle region, has publicly reached out to National Front voters "who share our values, my values."

"I don't hear extremist words coming from their mouths," she said this week on TF1, in the company of former Prime Minister Francois Fillon on a campaign outing.

For Le Pen, the isolation wall "has imploded."

The conservatives "have evolved under the pressure of their voters and their base," Le Pen was quoted as saying Wednesday in the online publication Le Telegramme." A very large majority of UMP voters feel close" to National Front's views.

The anti-Racism group SOS Racism denounces deal-makers as the "candidates of shame."

Says the No. 2 in the Socialist Party, Harlem D?sir: "The extreme right is advancing inside UMP like in Swiss cheese."

For a minute there, we thought we had traveled in time to 2013. We turned on the TV at 1:45 p.m. ET to watch President Obama's big economic speech, and there was President Romney instead. But it turned out Obama was just late, so that Candidate Romney took the opportunity to go first.

Obama seemed to think he had gone back in time to 2008. As everyone expected, he spent much of the speech blaming George W. Bush for America's economic troubles. Presumably he took encouragement from a new Gallup poll released this morning: "Americans continue to place more blame for the nation's economic problems on George W. Bush than on Barack Obama, even though Bush left office more than three years ago."

Racist abuse, far-right flags at Russia match

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Racist abuse by Russian fans toward a Czech Republic player at a European Championship match was reported to UEFA on Saturday.

Expert spotters from the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network identified verbal insults targeted at Theodor Gebre Selassie, who is black, during Russia's 4-1 win on Friday in Wroclaw, Poland.

"There was some suggestion that the Czech defender went to take a corner and had a few problems," FARE executive director Piara Powar told The Associated Press.

Fans also displayed a nationalist "Russian Empire" flag which "we take as evidence of far-right sensibilities," Powar said in a telephone interview.

Film circulating online Saturday also showed some Russian fans attacking stadium stewards after the match.

Four security personnel were treated in a hospital but were not badly injured, a Polish police spokesman said. Police are studying security video footage to identify fans involved.

UEFA said in a statement that "around 30 fans" attacked the stewards, and "the situation was quickly and efficiently brought under control."

The reported incidents came in the second match of Euro 2012, which kicked off Friday amid concerns of potential racist incidents involving fans in co-host nations Poland and Ukraine.

However, Russia's fans are under scrutiny after UEFA linked up with FARE to appoint a 31-strong team of expert anti-discrimination spotters.

Two monitors, mingling with fans of each team at a match, will work to identify offensive banners, chants and behavior in stadiums, and report to UEFA within 24 hours.

Powar said FARE officials aimed to provide footage of Gebre Selassie being abused.

"We are trying to get that evidence, and it's not always possible to capture it on film," he said.

UEFA has pledged zero tolerance of discrimination at the three-week tournament.

The 16 competing teams' national federations are responsible for their fans' actions. They would be fined by UEFA before facing possible expulsion from Euro 2012 for repeated offenses.

"We don't expect UEFA to act on every report," Powar acknowledged. "It's tough to evidence everything that could be admissible in a hearing."

Concerns of racism at Euro 2012 were fueled last month by a British television program, entitled "Stadiums of Hate," showing discrimination and violent incidents at recent club matches in Poland and Ukraine. It was broadcast in Poland this week.

Racism marred the Netherlands' preparations for its opening match Saturday against Denmark after several spectators made monkey noises at players during a squad practice in Krakow, Poland, which was attended by 25,000 people.

UEFA President Michel Platini has said that his organization has given referees the power to stop and abandon matches if crowds racially abused players.

After Italy forward Mario Balotelli threatened to leave the field if abused, Platini warned players they would get yellow cards for acting alone to protest.

Gebre Selassie said this week that he would not walk off the field.

"I'm not ready to give up," said the 25-year-old player, whose father is Ethiopian. "I definitely won't leave. I'll stay until they throw stones at me."

Bethel hires Drew Fernelius to coach men's and women's tennis

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. ? Bethel University announces the hiring of Drew Fernelius as the new men's and women's tennis coach. A former Minnesota State High School Tennis Champion and two-time NCAA Tennis All-American at the University of St. Thomas, Fernelius brings exceptional depth that will enhance player's on-the-court performance and off-the-court experience. Fernelius will begin this new full-time position on June 1.

Previously Fernelius worked as the boys and girls varsity tennis coach at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School, where he not only increased participation by 25 percent, but also tripled winning matches for both teams within two seasons. Additionally, Fernelius has tutored many in summer camp settings and has taught players of all levels for four years at the Williston Tennis Center in Minnetonka, Minn.

ComScore: Stop Bashing Facebook Ads

An industry group that measures digital analytics is warning naysayers that it?s time to stop criticizing the effectiveness of Facebook?s (FB) ad platform.

The comments from comScore (SCOR) come a week ahead of a planned report where the research firm is expecting to ?shed new light on how Facebook marketing really works,? and show some favorable metrics on the social network?s highly-debated ad platform.

?We are gaining critical new insights that show Facebook earned media is having a statistically significant positive lift on people?s purchase of a brand,? comScore said on its official blog.

The comScore research compares the behavior, such as brand site engagement and purchase, of similar groups of individuals exposed to different levels of media impression.

The promise to clear the air on Facebook?s ad platform comes a few days after Reuters released a poll that indicated Facebook users are not swayed by the social media site?s ads. ComScore said the poll ?got the story wrong.?

Judging the effectiveness of an ad based solely on often it is clicked is a ?weak indicator of true campaign performance,? as is drawing conclusions from a poll of consumers who often fail to provide accurate assessments of their own behavior or shy away from admitting that advertising actually had an impact on their behavior, comScore said.

?Their accuracy in recalling their own behavior over an extended period of time can be especially unreliable,? comScore said. ?People might be able to accurately tell you how many times they have eaten at a restaurant in the past week, but they would probably do a poor job estimating that number over the past three months.?

The analytics company, which is releasing a study titled ?The Power of Like 2: How Social Marketing Works? at a conference in New York next week, said ads can often impact buyer decisions weeks or even months down the road.

ComScore also rebuffed Reuters? report that Facebook users are spending less time on the site today compared with six months ago. ComScore said its behavioral measurement of engagement metric, which electronically and passively observes time spent on web sites, shows time spent per user was actually up a few percent from six months ago.

Facebook leaped into the public markets three weeks ago but its shares have retreated well below the $38 IPO price amid growing concerns about whether its ad platform will be able to continue enticing advertisers.

The comScore blog post said that while it is time to advance the discussion of marketing and advertising effectiveness, it must be done using ?meaningful measurement approaches? and not ?self-reported recollection.??

Frequent writer moves down road

Dear Editor,

My first real foray into writing and speaking for public consumption was in 1999 when a couple of Milpitas politicians, in cooperation with the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, arranged for the flag of the People?s Republic of China to be raised next to the flag of the United States of America first in front of the Santa Clara County Government Center and then in front of Milpitas City Hall. The occasion for the flag raising was to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of their communist government and I (and many, many others) felt that the enslavement of a billion people was nothing to celebrate. A political battle ensued that resulted in, among other things, the flag poles on the new city hall being built in a manner that insured the flag of the United States of America would always fly above other flags.

During that period of time, many people who had escaped the communists contacted me and encouraged me to be a voice for them. In the ensuing years, more often than not, the people who seek me out to encourage me to keep writing have described themselves as having escaped from everything from the harsh tyranny of the Islamic government of Iran to the soft tyranny of socialist Holland. I feel complimented when people who have come to this country for freedom appreciate what I write.

What originally attracted my wife and I to Milpitas was the incredibly cosmopolitan population and the fact that they seemed to all get along so well ?

and that was before the large influx of immigrants from all over the Pacific Rim and the Indian subcontinent. We wanted our children to be raised in an atmosphere where they were exposed to many different cultures and we were not disappointed.

Now, with our family raised and visits to our grandchildren requiring significant travel, we have decided to make a lifestyle change that will have us move a few miles down the road to Sunnyvale. While my office will remain in Milpitas and we will be no strangers to St. Elizabeth Church and our favorite restaurants in town, our heads will be hitting the pillow elsewhere.

The most powerful personal finance tool available

If you had access to a tool that would serve as a financial roadmap, showing you clearly how to live within your means, be generous, and save or invest for future goals, wouldn?t you use it?

And if you had access to a tool that would help create a sense of financial teamwork and trust in your marriage, wouldn?t you use it?

What is this magical tool?

Why, of course, it?s the lowly, much maligned, much misunderstood budget ? or, as I prefer, Cash Flow Plan.

What wealthy people know

When some people think of a budget, they think only certain types need one. People with lots of debt. People with a low income. The wealthy? No way, or so they think.

In fact, one of the most interesting findings from the classic book, ?The Millionaire Next Door,? is that over half of all millionaire households use a budget to guide their finances.

As authors Thomas Stanley and Wiliam Danko explain, ?Planning and controlling consumption are key factors underlying wealth accumulation?Operating a household without a budget is akin to operating a business without a plan, without goals, and without direction.?

Haven?t ever used a Cash Flow Plan? You could start today.

I walk through the four steps to setting up and using a Cash Flow Plan in the Budget Quick Start Guide that?s available for free on the Resources tab, so I?m not going to repeat them here. You?ll find our Recommended Spending Guidelines there as well, which will help you develop your plan.

The Guidelines cover four different size households (1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-person households) and nine different incomes, ranging from $30,000 to $150,000. Just find the one that most closely resembles your circumstances.

You?ll see that these are ideal plans, meaning they assume no debt other than a reasonable mortgage (we recommend devoting no more than 25 percent of your household?s monthly gross income to the combination of your mortgage, property taxes, and homeowner?s insurance).

If you have other debts, you?ll have to adjust your spending in other categories to allow for the debt payments.

But, but, but?

Whenever someone comes to me with a financial dilemma ? they?re deep in debt, can?t find any money to save, can?t stop fighting about money with their spouse ? I always ask whether they?re using a Cash Flow Plan to guide their household?s finances. The vast majority of the time, the answer is no.

And the ?no? is often accompanied by a quizzical look as if I didn?t understand the question. ?But what I was really asking??

I did understand. It?s just that I need more information. Objective, factual information.

To be sure, there?s a ton of emotional stuff involved in managing money ? temperaments, moods, stressful circumstances, the emotional imagery used in advertising. We often get in trouble with money when emotion overrides logic.

A well-designed Cash Flow Plan gives us the logical, factual information we need to live within our means, be generous, save and invest, avoid debt, and spend smart. Assuming there?s enough income to meet basic needs, that?s true for every income level and household size.

And, while I don?t like to whack people over the head with the Bible or guilt them into action, as stewards of God?s resources, shouldn?t we be proactively, knowledgably managing His resources? A Cash Flow Plan is the essential tool for doing that.

I firmly believe everyone would benefit from the use of a Cash Flow Plan. Rich or poor, young or old, single or married. Everyone.

It isn?t drudgery, and it isn?t something you go on like a diet. It?s simply the single most powerful tool available for successful money management. Why not start putting this tool to work in your life today?

Casey Anthony to Leave U.S. For Costa Rica?

Casey Anthony wants to leave Florida as soon as legally possible and is eyeing a move to the central American paradise of Costa Rica, according to reports.

Anthony has been in hiding since she was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, but has recently been making forays back into the public.

Virtually unrecognizable due to the amount of weight she has gained sitting around doing nothing, she is soon planning on leaving the U.S., and for good.

She would have fled already, but Anthony is on probation for one year after pleading guilty to check fraud and is required to live in Florida during that time.

Once Casey's probation ends later this summer, she plans on ditching the sunshine state for Costa Rica. She is "counting the days," according to sources.

"She has been researching countries that she could move to and Costa Rica is at the top of the list," a source close to the situation tells Radar Online.

"Casey wants to live in a tropical setting and the cost of living is extremely low in Costa Rica. She wants to put as much distance as possible from Florida."

"She feels this is the best possibly place to start a new life. Costa Rica also appeals to her because Americans are warmly embraced by the locals."

Not sure that applies to accused child-murderers, but whatever.

There's one additional holdup, of course. She is still being sued by Zanaida Gonzalez for defamation after Casey said a woman with that name kidnapped Caylee.

According to reports, Casey Anthony is “annoyed” and dreading that she has to testify at the upcoming trial, even if she can blame only herself.
