'House' closes after 8 seasons of healing and pain

NEW YORK (AP) ? Whither Dr. Gregory House? Would the cantankerous hero of the Fox medical drama mend his ways or self-destruct for all time?

That was the mystery as "House" barreled to its conclusion Monday night. In a recent interview, series star Hugh Laurie had teased that House was coming to the edge of a precipice eight years in the making: "Is he gonna step forward or step back? Is it life or is it death?"

Viewers were rewarded with a satisfying answer in the one-hour finale. (Caution: Read no further if you want to preserve the surprise.)

The episode began with a typical example of House's bedside manner.

Patient: "I was in a car accident last month."

House: "I won a swimming trophy in high school. Your turn."

But this hospital encounter gave way to a House hallucination. He appeared to be in a bleak, abandoned factory loft with fire lashing around him and with that same patient, now dead, lying nearby. It was a typical example of "House" surrealism, as, intermittently through much of the hour, House debated whether to live or die while interrogated by characters from his past.

House's challenge as the episode began was how to stay out of jail. A prank he pulled on last week's episode threatened to put him in the slammer for a six-month sentence ? a month longer than his best friend, Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), was expected to live with his terminal cancer. House was desperate to be with Wilson in those final weeks.

As everybody knows, House was a grumpy, brilliant diagnostician with a limp, a cane, buggy blue eyes and an addiction to painkillers. He was also a master manipulator. Could he hatch a successful scheme to stay free ? like persuading Wilson to take the fall for his destructive prank?

"You do remember I'm dying, don't you?" Wilson responded incredulously.

"Which is why you'll never spend a day in jail," House declared. "I don't want to lose this time with you."

Wilson refused: "If I do this, I'm teaching you that your bad behavior will always be rewarded."

Meanwhile, on the finale, could House solve the puzzle of existence?

"Every patient I've had, 70 years from now, will all be as dead as Wilson," House grumbled in his hallucination. "Everybody dies. It's meaningless."

By then, House had dropped out of sight. Wilson and other colleagues at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital feared the worst: that the tormented House had killed himself.

Indeed, a fire raged at the real-life warehouse, where House, along with his patient, a heroin addict, had retreated to get high. House appeared to die in the raging inferno. His body was recovered and identified.

A funeral was held.

"He was a healer," said Wilson in a eulogy that quickly grew bitter: "House was an ass. ... He claimed to be on some heroic quest for the truth. But the truth is, he was a bitter jerk who liked making people miserable. And he proved that by dying selfishly, numbed by narcotics, without a thought of anyone."

But then Wilson was interrupted by a cellphone text message: "SHUT UP, YOU IDIOT."

Wilson found House sitting on a building stoop, alive and ? by House's standards ? well. He explained he had escaped from the back of the building, and traded dental records with the patient who had overdosed, whose body was recovered.

"I'm dead, Wilson," House told his shocked friend. "How do you want to spend your last five months?"

The two were last seen out in the countryside on their motorcycles.

"When the cancer starts getting really bad ?" Wilson began, but House cut him off.

"Cancer's boring," House said and flashed a little grin. They rode off.

For House, boring had always been life's least tolerable state. The finale ? the series' 177th episode ? served well as a reminder: "House" seldom was.

Another is New York Times columnist David Brooks. I like Brooks for the same reasons that I liked his conservative precursor at the Times, William Safire. Like Safire, Brooks often draws on science for guidance in the realm of politics, and he is unpredictable. Being predictable is a much worse sin for a columnist than being wrong.

I was thus delighted when, at a graduation ceremony I attended recently at Columbia University?s School of Journalism, my alma mater, Brooks got an award and gave a charmingly self-deprecating speech. He said that, although he is a narcissist, as all columnists must be, he considered many of his columns to be half-baked failures, which he rushes into print before they?re ready. When Brooks made this confession, I immediately thought of his March 19 column ?When the Good Do Bad,? which wins my award for? ?Worst Brooks Column Ever.?

Pondering the alleged massacre two months ago of 16 Afghan civilians by American soldier Robert Bales, Brooks wrote that ?when somebody who seems mostly good does something completely awful, we?re rendered mute or confused. But of course it happens all the time. That?s because even people who contain reservoirs of compassion and neighborliness also possess a latent potential to commit murder.?

In support of this claim, Brooks cited a survey by evolutionary psychologist David Buss, who found that 91 percent of male students and 84 of females had fantasized about killing someone. Brooks continued: ?These thoughts do not arise from playing violent video games, Buss argues. They occur because we are descended from creatures that killed to thrive and survive. We?re natural-born killers and the real question is not what makes people kill but what prevents them from doing so.?

First of all, Buss is like a parody of an evolutionary biologist, who spins surveys of modern, mostly American college kids into cartoonishly simplistic proclamations about human evolution. As I noted in an October 1995 article in Scientific American, ?The New Social Darwinist,? Buss?s speculations?which discount the role of nurture, culture and reason in shaping our behavior?are prime examples of what the biologist Stephen Jay Gould mocked as Darwinian ?just-so stories.?

Also, as I have pointed out ad nauseam on this blog and in a new book, the evidence that most people are ?natural-born killers? is flimsy to non-existent. As primatologist Frans de Waal and anthropologist Douglas Fry suggest in a special section of the May 18 Science on ?Human Conflict,? war, genocide and other forms of mass murder seem to be relatively recent cultural phenomena that culture can help us transcend.

As former soldier and West Point psychologist Dave Grossman points out, most soldiers make reluctant killers. And as psychologist Philip Zimbardo, who conducted the infamous Stanford prison experiment in 1971, has shown, most war crimes are the result of bad situations, not bad dispositions, bad barrels, not bad apples. In other words, war makes even ordinary, empathetic people act like psychopaths.

March 19 column, made this point: Robert Bales ?was a soldier in a prolonged and brutal war that has persistently raised troubling questions about the limits of pressures that people can endure. 19 May 2012- Much of the e-discovery work we do involves intellectual property, and it has involved us in both the ongoing global patent and copyright litigation wars as well as proactive reviews of internal processes related to e-discovery with an eye toward reducing risks and costs associated with future litigation or government investigations.?? This has also afforded us the opportunity to attend several World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) conferences on managing IP litigation, and the role played by e-discovery, as well as attending the recent?Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Ah, patents.? Developed to create more incentives for people to invest time and money in research and development, which in turn would advance technology.? But seemingly having morphed into patent wars that ? the cynics say ? have limited innovation as more and more money is spent on patent lawsuits instead of technological advancement.? According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, an average of 2,500 patent infringement cases are filed per year.

And the money is big.? Google bought Motorola at $12.5 billion and its more than 17,000 mobile-related patents, and Facebook spent $550 million on patents from Microsoft to bolster its legal battle with Yahoo.

Note:? Twitter, on the other hand, has announced the Innovator?s Patent Agreement, promising not to use patents in a way that harms innovation.

Corporations are caught between Scylla and Charybdis, between incredible revenues ? and incredible legal fees.

Now, the math is not so straight forward.? If every Microsoft patent infringement case were worth $25 million or more, a conservative estimate would be $300 million in legal fees for Microsoft to fight battles over intellectual property.? But one suspects sometimes the legal fees are required.? Microsoft has estimated that if it were forced to pay the licensing fee that Motorola has demanded for its video compression and WiFi patents, it would cost the company $4 billion per year.? And no doubt all of this is a bonanza for lawyers. The Microsoft-Motorola case involves 27 attorneys at five law firms, as well as in-house counsel.

But patent licensing is also a huge source of revenue for companies.? Deloitte has estimated that software publishers generated $16.9 billion in revenue in 2010 from intellectual property licensing, which made up 82% of that industry?s revenue.

And the licensing deals are the biggie.? Android?s patent strength is increasingly under fire and with companies lining up for their share of licensing fees, many IP pundits see the platform headed off the tracks.? Just look at Microsoft and how it could be poised to turn Android into its next billion-dollar business if it can get enough Android licensees to agree to pay royalties due to alleged infringed use of Microsoft patents.? And in a similar vein, Oracle?s campaign although we?ll need to wait-and-see how the Oracle/Google litigation plays out.

Yes, a rise in attorneys? fees in IP cases will continue.? But as we learned at a recent WIPO conference in Geneva which focused on managing IP litigation (and the role played by e-discovery), this rise in costs has to be seen in context.??Most IP disputes now require a very high level of specialization, knowledge and market understanding in order to direct such cases.

Hong Kong Football Club?s Hockey section?is literally having a golden season. HKFC Hockey section chairman Charlie Poulton tells William Wadsworth about the local game, this season and next week?s swish celebrations.

Expatriate Express: How has Hockey changed in Hong Kong and at Club over the past 50 years??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Charlie Poulton: The game is totally unrecognisable today from where it was even 15 years ago, never mind 50, and the Club?s hockey season has moved with it at the same pace. It is perhaps enough to say that hockey is a very progressive sport, so much so that in fact I would say it is second nature to all hockey players, not only to embrace changes but to expect them. At the start of each season everyone will ask if there are any new rule changes for the new season ahead. Hockey, like cricket, is also experimenting with changes in its format too with different numbers of players a side and different pitch dimensions. Like tennis, the surface has changed and the weapons are no longer wooden. The leading tournaments have also adopted umpire-decision review systems and these tournaments are expertly streamed and presented onto the web allowing the sport to reach huge audiences worldwide. Hockey is played and enjoyed by large numbers of men and women all around the world and it is perhaps this last point that makes it a uniquely sociable sport between the genders, this has in fact always been the case, and I am glad to report that this aspect of the sport has not changed, it remains one of the most inclusive and accessible team sports for men and women globally.

EE: Are there any oldies about who have seen it all, who have any special memories or can recount any achievements?????????????????? Poulton: In our Club there are plenty! Gathering their insights will be a challenge, however a read of the Club?s 125th Anniversary book Along The Sports Road and a walk down the players? tunnel to look at all the hockey team photos over the years will give you some inkling of the spirit the infuses the section.

EE: Have you seen any changes in the game since you?came here?? Poulton: The game at the Club remains based around 15 teams, seven women?s and eight men?s teams, as it was when I arrived in 2000. Over that time the players have, along with the growth of the city, a great deal more to do in their daily lives and so perhaps the biggest challenge has been to get people to make the Club and the Hockey section their home from home rather than simply a multi-sport recreation centre. People are less able to commit than perhaps they were in the past and this has meant we have had to try so very much harder to get people to tour, to attend social events, to umpire, to help with the junior programs or to volunteer onto the committee to help run the section. We are however once again enjoying some considerable successes in all of these areas and perhaps that is also reflected in the talent that now plays for us at all levels. At the highest level, we have of course just won the men?s and ladies Premier leagues, (and the ladies? Cup) proving that we are as strong as we have ever been and that there is real camaraderie throughout each of the teams as well as between the teams at all levels now. Perhaps the most striking element of change in the game is the speed at which it is played. To win at any level now it seems that you have to be physically and mentally faster than ever before, the game is so much faster than it used to be. In Hong Kong we are also now seeing the top teams being paid to play, so our amateurs are now up against imported players from the sub-continent who are very talented and whose day job it is to play hockey. For how long we can continue to be the best, as amateurs against these professional teams, is a matter for conjecture, but I like to think that to win the Premier league you have to beat HKFC and that you have to spend a lot of money importing players to do so and I say good luck to them if that?s what it takes to lift the standard of hockey being played in Hong Kong.

EE: How would you encourage new arrivals and newbies to play or watch hockey in HK?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Poulton: We have a vibrant hockey community with over 300 senior players registered and a very active minis hockey affiliated to the Hockey Section. We regularly field 15 teams (8 Mens & 7 Ladies) so for those who want to watch some hockey, the HKFC hockey pitch over the weekend is normally a good bet! We welcome new members; particularly at the beginning of the season (late August/early September) when trials take place and team squads are decided.
