What a buzz: For Obama, beer a way to connect

Being identified as a beer drinker is an easy way for Obama to connect with votes and serves as a not-so-subtle reminder that his Republican rival Mitt Romney, a Mormon, doesn't drink. James Crowley in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington. Being identified as a beer drinker is an easy way for Obama to connect with votes and serves as a not-so-subtle reminder that his Republican rival Mitt Romney, a Mormon, doesn't drink. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama was barely back in Iowa, ready to drink in the adulation of supporters, when the booze news broke: The White House beer recipe is out.

The tweet from presidential spokesman Jay Carney along the motorcade ride seemed light enough ? we're talking about honey-flavored beer here ? but it also served up a reminder of a campaign imperative. Obama wants to be the guy with whom people want to have a beer.

As constituencies go, Obama would seem to have the voting bloc locked up, given that his opponent, Republican Mitt Romney, does not consume alcohol given his Mormon faith.

But as a political symbol, beer is not just about beer.

It is about the likeable, accessible, regular guy who relates to life in the real world and enjoys popping a cold one. Sure, taste counts, but so do votes.

Romney and Obama are both wealthy men who, in the final two months of the campaign, are trying to build support and turnout among the working-class crowd.

It is why Obama's day in Iowa was not just about his speeches in two cities, but his unexpected stop in Bob Roe's Point After Pizza & Lounge in Sioux City, where one woman wore a t-shirt that said "It's never too early to tailgate."

During his term, Obama has sought to find some racial harmony over beer (there was that media-hyped "beer summit" in the Rose Garden.) He has worked the crowds in sports bars and college bars. He has bought a round for folks at the Iowa State Fair, where the standard cry of political rallies ? "Four More Years!" ? morphed into the more memorable "Four More Beers!"

And now he even brews his own.

Well, the chefs at the most famous and powerful house in America brew it for him, but it was his idea, and he bought the brewing kit.

"Brewing beer is becoming a thing that Americans are doing in their houses and garages across the country," said White House chef Sam Kass in a video posted Saturday on the White House web site. "And the president certainly thought it would be a great idea to see if would join the American people in that time-honored tradition."

The Obama team knew it had a buzz going here.

Word spread about the home-brewed White House beer last month when Obama, during another stop in Iowa, got in a conversation with a local resident about it. The president had an aide bring the man a bottle of the beer brewed in the White House kitchen.

Since then, growing interest and even a petition drive led the White House to release the recipe just as Obama starts his battleground-state tour toward the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

"Ale to the Chief," said the White House blog post, which included a link to the brewing process.

The White House's rookie brew crew has made three kinds: Honey Brown Ale, Honey Porter and Honey Blonde Ale, although recipes for the first two only were released on Saturday. Kass said on-site historians have determined this is the first time alcohol has been brewed or distilled at the White House.

Add that to Obama's first-term record.

Should he lose, the White House bar menu may well look different. Romney drinks Cherry Coke Zero or Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi.

Even working the bar crowd can offer a little political risk. Just as Obama roamed the pizza place on Saturday, the Iowa fans who filled the place groaned as a long touchdown was scored against their team. "I don't want to be associated with that play," Obama told three men dejected as he came to their table.

Worse yet, their pitcher of beer was empty.

Crosstex Energy Provides Update on Impact of Louisiana Slurry on Partnership?s Facilities and Operations

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Crosstex Energy companies, Crosstex Energy, L.P. (NASDAQ: XTEX) (the Partnership) and Crosstex Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: XTXI) (the Corporation), are providing this update on the impact and expected impacts of the slurry near Bayou Corne, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, on the Partnership?s facilities and operations.

?Crosstex Butane Cavern Shows Little-to-no Threat to Slurry Hole Area?

In early August, a slurry-filled sinkhole developed in Assumption Parish near Bayou Corne, Louisiana. The cause of the slurry is currently under investigation by Louisiana state and local officials. Consequently, the Partnership took a section of its 36-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline located near the sinkhole out of service. Service to certain markets, primarily in the Mississippi River area, has been curtailed or interrupted, and the Partnership has worked with its customers to secure alternative natural gas supplies so that disruptions are minimized. The Partnership expects that the ongoing overall business impact on the services provided by the pipeline, which include gathering, processing, transportation and end-user sales, will be approximately $250,000- $300,000 per month while the pipeline section is out of service.

The Partnership will relocate the portion of the pipeline affected and certain services will not resume until the relocation has been completed. The Partnership is evaluating potential rerouting alternatives, timing and expected costs. Based on the current alternatives being considered, the Partnership estimates the cost of the relocation to be $20-25 million and expects to complete the relocation by summer 2013. The Partnership is assessing the potential for recovering its losses from responsible parties and insurance coverage. The Partnership plans to write-off its investment in the section of the impacted existing pipeline and capitalize the costs of the replacement pipeline. The write-off is a non-cash impairment charge and estimated to be less than $0.5 million.

The Partnership also owns and operates the Napoleonville storage facility, which is located off Highway 70 in the Bayou Corne area. The facility consists of two salt dome natural gas liquids storage caverns. The Partnership is currently storing approximately 900,000 barrels of normal butane in the facilities for third parties. The Partnership?s management does not believe that the storage facilities have been affected by the slurry. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality recently supported this assessment in a press release issued August 16, 2012, entitled ?Crosstex Butane Cavern Shows Little-to-no Threat to Slurry Hole Area,? which can be found at http://www.deq.louisiana.gov/portal/portals/0/news/pdf/crosstex.pdf. Crosstex is continuously monitoring its Napoleonville operations and taking additional precautionary measures as determined necessary.

?Our highest priority is to ensure the safety of the surrounding community, our employees, contractors and the environment,? said Barry E. Davis, Crosstex President and Chief Executive Officer. ?We took immediate actions to ensure the safety of all involved and the integrity of our facilities and operations near the sinkhole, and continue to work closely with state agencies and local officials.?

About the Crosstex Energy Companies

Crosstex Energy, L.P., a midstream natural gas company headquartered in Dallas, operates approximately 3,500 miles of natural gas, natural gas liquids, and oil pipelines, 10 processing plants and four fractionators. The Partnership also operates barge terminals, rail terminals, product storage facilities, brine water disposal wells and an extensive truck fleet.

Crosstex Energy, Inc. owns the two percent general partner interest, a 22 percent limited partner interest and the incentive distribution rights of Crosstex Energy, L.P.

Second hand car auction is one of the best ways to save on car price. It is a unique car shopping experience that most people will enjoy. Moreover, second hand car auctions offer a wide range of make and model so you can choose the perfect car for you.

When you are going to purchase in a Second hand car auction, you can save a lot of money since all of the cars that are sold here are very affordable compared to other places to purchase a car. Since, most of the cars are already secondhand, which is supposed to be cheaper compared to the brand new cars. In fact, there are even luxury second hand cars that are sold in an affordable price.

Considering that you will be buying through a second hand car auction, there are some things that you have to keep in mind. Remember, that not a lot of people are completely satisfied with buying cars through auction. In order to remove the stress and pressure in buying your choice of car, make sure to follow these simple yet convenient steps.

Look at the Cars you Want to Buy

Most second hand car auctions will allow you to check the cars available before bidding starts. It is best that you check out the make and models that you want to buy. This is also the perfect time to talk to the seller about some information about the car you are interested in buying. If you can bring along with you an expert in car parts so that you can be sure you are paying the right worth of money. Lastly, it is important that you ask for the vehicle identification number to check for car history and condition.

Gather Information

Learn more about the car before actually buying it. It is best that you understand the history of the car, how it was used, the amount of mileage, and why it is being sold in the auction. The history of the car is important if you want to avoid wasting your money on a car that needed another thousand dollars for repair. Moreover, the history of the car will also help you in deciding which model is best for you and your bidding option.

Do Not Be Hasty in Bidding

When you are going to bid at a Second hand car auction, you should think first before bidding something. You should check if it is worth the money that you are going to spend. Sometimes people hastily bid with a very high price and, in the end, would not appreciate what they have paid for. To avoid this from happening to you, it is best that you should rethink your options before bidding higher.

Self-improvement seminar for good leaders

What are you? A leader or a follower?

We can all become leaders and also followers. Both are important but the leader sets the good example for his/her followers. A good leader has a good follower.

If you think you are not a good leader, maybe you should have a self-improvement seminar.

Self-improvement seminar for leaders is training them to be good to the followers.

There are a variety of self-improvement seminar for you. But leadership training seminar is the best for you.

In order to be a great leader, one must possess various qualities that will attract followers. The following qualities are just of few of the many qualities that are vital for effective leadership:

1. Charisma- charismatic leaders have the gift to touch people through their choice of words. Charismatic leaders are alluring, charming and can encourage followers to support a grand vision or idea.

2. Positive Attitude ? A leader who has a positive attitude will influence his/her followers to carry that same attitude. A good example of a leader with a positive attitude could be a parent or teacher.

Mothers, fathers, or elementary teachers appear and are viewed as role models to the young children they are teaching and nurturing.

These role models are the first leaders they encounter in life. Children become very dependent of leaders because they are their vehicles to the outside world and provide much needed help and assistance.

If a parent is nurturing and loving to their child, they will thrive under this encouragement.

If a school teacher provides a positive learning experience to the child, they will succeed and that success will become contagious? In any circumstance, a leader?s positive attitude will have greater impact and influence on their followers.

3. Motivation ? In an athletic world, a motivating leader could be a coach, trainer or even a fellow teammate. While the talent of players is a good determinant of a winning team, their coach is also an important factor.

If a coach can not produce a winning team, his job is at stake. A coach?s motivation involves infusing his players with high standards, and setting challenging but attainable goals as they perform well. Thus, his/her ability to motivate his players will enhance their performances.

Motivation also correlates with having a positive attitude. When a coach has a positive attitude and provides a positive environment for his players, then the team will most likely be motivated to move in his/her direction where ultimate success can be found.

4. Assertiveness ? A leader has the responsibility to guide the direction of his or her company. When a leader is firm and assertive in delegating tasks to his subordinates, they will hold a greater respect to follow through on their assignments.

An assertive leader has the ability to convey enforcement without being too autocratic or threatening to their subordinates.

Furthermore, an assertive leader should not make his subordinates feel like they?re in a hostile environment. Instead, an assertive leader should respect his people, and require proper accountability at the same time. A leader?s assertiveness and confidence earns respect. With that respect, people are much more likely to follow, help, and emulate their leader to achieve success.

Self-improvement is important for leaders. Attending self-improvement seminars may be a good help in being a good leader.
