Have a positive attitude and enjoy life

Article by Terry Barrett

An optimist will describe a half filled glass as half full, but the pessimist will describe it as being half empty.

If you came second in a competition ? would you jump for joy and set in motion whatever is needed to be first next time around ? or would you be discouraged and find a reason not to try again?

Life is crammed with choices ? it?s an unavoidable fact. The big choice you have now is whether to take the pessimist?s view and live a life that?s self defeating, or to take the optimist?s view and live a challenging fulfilled life.

There is good reason for taking the path of the optimist ? a positive attitude has been linked to an overall higher moral, success in business and it has also been linked to better health.

Optimists don?t have any more luck than anyone else ? they are confronted with just as many problems and as such are really no different from everybody else. Where they do differ is in the manner that the deal with their misfortunes ? often the exact opposite of what would be expected.

An optimist will regard any setback as temporary. He will view the problem as something to learn from. A difficult situation will not deter the optimist, he will simply see it as a challenge and take whatever action is needed to overcome it.

Statements such as ?it won?t get any better?? won?t be spoken by an optimist.

Having a positive attitude helps optimists overcome sudden changes to their normal life such as a sudden tragedy or an unfortunate event. They pick themselves up and continue onwards.

People respond better towards those with a positive attitude. Their view on life will often rub off onto others and can be a great influence.

Being an optimist is a desirable quality. Those that display a positive outlook are easily accepted into society, whereas those that show a pessimistic are often treated less favourably.

At times of stress, optimists will generally maintain a state of well being. Pessimists on the other hand will often react to stressful events by simply denying they exist or by taking actions to avoid dealing with the problem (such as quitting).

According to research, having an optimistic outlook can help maintain an efficient immune system and therefore help fight off or recover quickly from illness. As a result optimists are often healthier, age better and suffer less from the normal physical illnesses associated with later life.

So the choice of being an optimist or a pessimist is a no brainer. Be optimistic and get more out of life ? have a positive attitude and you will enjoy the benefits for the rest of your life.

Look forward to success in everything you do, be resilient. You will hit bad times ? just as you have before and just as everybody else does ? but don?t dwell on them ? push yourself forward and get back on track ? and while you?re at it why not help to inspire others? If you can see them improving themselves, it will heighten your own positive outlook.
