Sport Psychology in Brazil: Approaches between Psychology and Physical Education

Cristianne Carvalho (Universidade Federal do Maranh?o;?S?o Lu?s; Brasil)

Sport Psychology is considered an emerging practice in Brazil. Turning into one of the eleven specialties in psychology practice, it has relied heavily on the recognition and regulation of the Federal Council of Psychology (Conselho Federal de Psicologia ? CFP; the resolution number 02/01 of the Federal Council of Psychology gives the title of Specialist in Sport Psychology in 2000 ? see www.pol.org.br), since 2000. The following summarizes the doctoral thesis in Social Psychology on the History of Sport Psychology in Brazil at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro ? UERJ).

The study takes place between the decades from 1930 to 1950 because of the lack of information in this period. The first studies in this area began to be of importance in Brazil in the late 1950s, more specifically in 1958, with the participation of Jo?o Carvalhaes in the technical committee of the victorious Brazilian Soccer Team. It is interesting that this actually occurs before the regulation of psychology as a profession in 1962. The Research we developed in the PhD made it possible to find information prior to that period, establishing an embryonic practice of psychology focused on the scope of physical activity inside the first school of Physical Education in Brazil, led initially by the Brazilian Army in Rio de Janeiro in 1930. This finding led to the first journals of Physical Education in Brazil, where it was identified the presence of psychology initiating an approach in the world of Physical Education, what is now called Sports Psychology. Some questions about this construction process and given these facts: how did this integration occur between Physical Education and Psychology? What relation can we find between Sport Psychology today with those early days?

Methodology

In an attempt to construct a narrative about the early history of Sport Psychology in Brazil, much of the contemporary social psychologists agree on the position that all knowledge is constructed from a social production where we all play a role in the process of construction of meaning. Based on constructionism, this view is characterized by questioning the truths guided in the representations of knowledge production, considering object and subject as social constructions at the same level of relationship and interaction. In social psychology this view is developed through the work of Kenneth Gergen, 1973 (

Social Psychology as history), Thomas Iba?ez (1993), Jonathan Potter (1996), Ian Hacking (2001), Lupicinio I?iguez (2004) and Mary Jane Spink (2004) in Brasil, to name a few.

The research method is based on a narrative record that relates the documented evidence collected with the one based on the bibliographic collection found in the first journals of Physical Education in Brazil.

The history of Sport Psychology known in Brazil

Sport Psychology is another branch of psychological knowledge and it is a reflection of its construction as a whole. Therefore, considerations about this knowledge are important to better situate the performers and explain their positions in this narrative.

In the USA, Psychology is based on the study of consciousness, its adaptive function and its evolution in humans. In Central Europe the emphasis was on the relationship between psychiatry and neurology when madness came to be explained as a disease of the mind rather than the nerves. Although such experiments have been significant for the emergence of various psychologies, only in the late nineteenth century in Germany, W. Wundt (1832-1920) and his psychological laboratory (1879) provided the experimental study of psychology in university education. The world turns to control, to measurement, and to classification in all aspects of individual and collective, internal and external to the individual.

According to Soares (2005: 19) ?*?+ the nineteenth century holds a great scientific revolution of the laboratories, industrialization and growth of disciplines and social institutions. *?+?. The scientific and capitalist ideologies take care of the society transforming itself into a large living organism driven by the growing sense of development. Everything can and should be measured, classified, compared, defined and widespread.

Brazil has traveled this path slowly as the institutionalization of psychology as a profession and academic knowledge have only occurred in the second half of the twentieth century (1962).

According to Ara?jo (2006: 102) psychology begins to settle in Brazil ?*?+ mainly by means of applied psychology ? whether in psychiatry or pedagogy with emphasis on psychometrics *?+?, which were strongly influenced by the demand for control and measurement that psychometrics provided, offering an approach between Psychology and Physical Education.

Although there are results in other sports, it is those results obtained through soccer that psychology was able to obtain evidence in the media with the performance of Jo?o Carvalhaes (JC), considered the founder of this area due to his participation in the Brazilian National Soccer Team, World Cup 1958. ISHPES-Bulletin 42 December 2012 16

Besides J. Carvalhaes, other names stand out in the soccer area such as Athayde Ribeiro da Silva and Em?lio Mira y Lopez. Both of them wrote the books ?Psychology and Soccer? and ?Sport Psychology and the preparation of the athlete.? in the 1960s. Since then, Sport Psychology has been developing and acting in other ways, but even 50 years after JC?s important participation in Brazilian soccer, Sport Psychology remains as an unknown field in this world.

History that deserves to be known

To understand those who played roles and the relations present in this construction process it was important to view the initial studies, which began in Brazilian history, in 1930 during the so called Vargas Era (1930-1945). It was a complex moment of great importance in our history due to the political, economic and social developments, but mainly due to the fact of that the Army was the initial promoter of the theoretical space so that Psychology could be discussed, even if occasionally.

Health, hygiene and and education become the primary focus of the state during this period. It is when medicine, the army and physical education ended up meeting. It is during the Get?lio Vargas Era that the first physical education schools in the country begin to appear, along with journals about psychology. The militarization of the body begins in the late 1930?s because

[...] the body is the issue of the moment and it is the center of attention for doctors, educators, engineers, teachers and institutions such as the army, the Church, the schools, the hospitals. Suddenly, we become aware that to think the society over to transform it was necessarily related to taking care of the body as a resource to achieve the whole integrity of the human being [...]. (Lenharo, 1986)

In this direction, the army became an inviting scenario for sport to develop according to such demands involving the notion of control and discipline. The foundation of the School of Physical Education of the Army (Escola de Educa??o F?sica do Ex?rcito ? EsEFEx), established in 1922, as a part of the new army organization in the early decades of the twentieth century, was the starting point of this project for the ideal man for the nation.

In another aspect of controlling bodies, medicine was devoted to combat many popular and mystical practices that served as instruments of cure or beliefs for cure in a social context of treating diseases of the second half of the nineteenth century.

Given this scenario, we find heterogeneous fields as Medicine, Physical Education, Army and Psychology grouping and building new relationships. Psychology is then a propitious area to be and build a new practice focused on physical activity and sports. It is inserted in this context invited by Physical Education to try to interfere in the relationship between mind and body, an old philosophical issue that appears in a new facet. To understand such insertion the research sought to analyze the articles from the first journals of Physical Education that emerged from 1930 to 1960.

Research sources:

1. Educa??o Physica Revista Technica de Esportes e Athletismo / Physical Education ? technical Magazine of Sports and Athletism (1932-1944): the first journal about physical education in Brazil, published twice a year by Companhia Brasil Editora S/A, Rio de Janeiro.

2. Revista de Educa??o F?sica/Journal of Physical Education (1932 to present): created by the School of Physical Education of the Army (EsEFEx) in order to help build the brazilian race. Currently the Army announces sporting activities;

3. Revista Brasileira de Educa??o F?sica/Brazilian Journal of Physical Education (1944-1952);

4. Revista Arquivos/?Arquivos? Journal (1945-1972): designed by the School of Physical Education and Sports (Escola de Educa??o F?sica e Desportos ? ENEFD), established in 1939 as the first upper level school attached to a university, the University of Brazil, now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro ? UFRJ). It has academic and technical character in its articles.

In the first decades the army, doctors and educators ventured to discuss issues they considered relevant in the world of physical activity. Some themes found in these journals:

?Psychology and Physical Education? (1935): article translated by Am?lia de Oliveira.

?Physical education under the psychological point of view? (1938): published by the 1st Lieutenant Airton Salgueiro Freitas, Instructor of Physical Education and Sports of EsEFEx and coach of the Brazilian team of modern pentathlon in London Olympics in 1948.

?Psychology applied to athletes? (1946) by Inezil Penna Marinho, professor of Metodology at ENEFD.

?Psychological research in the scientific control of sports? (1954/1955) and ?Psychological conditions for the application of quality education to hygiene, physical education and recreation? (1964). Both written by Carlos Sanches Queiroz.

?The importance of psychological research in the scientific control of sporting activities? (1953) ?The need for guidance in the practice of sport? (1962) and ?The contribution of psychology to the sport orientation? (1964) written by Cec?lia Turre?o Stramandinoli. ISHPES-Bulletin 42 December 2012 17

Results

1. The Sport Psychology in Brazil comes from the insertion in Physical Education and Sports Medicine and also by the knowledge focused on strategies to control the body. Physical Education in the decades from 1930 to 1950 included psychology in its journals in an attempt to respond to the demand in the formation of the ideal man for the country.

2. Articles and authors talk about psychology in the world of physical activity in a military environment thirty years before the institutionalization of psychology and twenty years before Carvalhaes?s action in Sport Psychology.

3. Psychology, as a field of knowledge, followed the trend of modernization of equipping itself with tests and techniques able to diagnose and intervene. It produced several specialties including what we call Sport Psychology.

4. Therefore, distinct and apparently opposing realities such as physical activity/psychology, army/psychology, psychology/physical education, mind/body, clearly approach in Brazil in the early twentieth century, initiating the establishment of what now is called Sport Psychology.

Stocks tumble after 'fiscal cliff' setback

50 min.

Stocks tumbled at the open on Wall Street Friday after the collapse of the Republicans' "Plan B" vote in the House of Representatives, aimed at averting the "fiscal cliff," undermined hopes a deal would be reached quickly.

With time running short to find a solution before Christmas, the White House said it would work with Congress to avoid the series of tax increases and spending cuts set to kick in at the start of next year. President Barack Obama said he was hopeful a deal can be reached quickly.

House Speaker John Boehner has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference to talk about the next step.

Our augmented selves: The promise of wearable computing

Our augmented selves The promise of wearable computing

By Donald Melanson and Michael Gorman

It's been an interesting year for Google's most famous side project. After emerging from the company's suitably mysterious X Lab in April, Glass appeared across the roundtable from Charlie Rose, gave conference attendees a skydiver's eye view at Google I/O, strutted down the catwalk at New York Fashion Week and shared the stage with California Governor Jerry Brown as he signed a bill into law allowing self-driving cars on the state's roads.

Yet, there's still more that we don't know about Google Glass than we know about it, despite its status as the highest-profile attempt at making wearable computing the next big thing. Public demonstrations of the tech have so far only hinted at its full potential. The promise of Glass echoes that of wearable computing in general, a promise that's remained largely unfulfilled despite decades of research driven by everyone from the military to DIYers.

Glam Slam: Style Stars Of 2012

There was just so MUCH good fashion this year.

Normally, I have a hard time narrowing things down to my top five.

PLAY IT NOW: The Best Dressed Of 2012

But not this year. I've got my top three and I had no problem getting there!

The top three dresses couldn't be more different, which I kind of like... I've got all the bases covered!

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Holidays In Hollywood: Stars Bundle Up For Winter

1. GWYNETH PALTROW IN TOM FORD: Sleek, chic, clean and modern. LOVED this look...who else but Gwyneth could pull off a CAPE at the Oscars? Of course it didn't hurt that said cape was by Tom Ford, but I just thought this look was flawless, from the accessories to the makeup and the slicked back pony tail.

2. BLAKE LIVELY IN ZUHAIR MURAD: Wowza! This dress says "I have arrived!" Not an easy feat when you are one of the most stylish women who wears one gorgeous outfit after another. This one steals the show though...it hugs every curve in all the right places. That plus the red nails and lips and the retro waves adds up to total glamour, a total va va voom look!

3. CHARLIZE THERON IN DIOR: Floaty, flirty, ultra feminine and extremely flattering, Charlize is a modern day goddess in this gorgeous pale pink gown. I stood right next to her on the carpet at the Golden Globes while she waited to do an interview on our platform and I could not stop staring at her. Simply beautiful.

'Miss Universe 2012' Pageant: Miss Venezuela Gives Bizarre, Rambling Answer (VIDEO)

  • Peggy Olson, "Mad Men"

She didn't have an easy start as a secretary at Sterling Cooper, but Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) has certainly worked her way up on the '60s era drama. Peggy was consdiered one of the biggest creative geniuses behind the company (before she left last season), although she certainly lost a few nights of sleep in the process.

  • Walter White, "Breaking Bad"

Once just a high school chemistry teacher, Walt (Bryan Cranston) has spent the past four years battling cancer, cooking meth and killing people. Oh, and he's now considered the drug king of New Mexico. It's kind of a tough job.

  • Deborah Morgan, "Dexter"

Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) is totally devoted to her job as a Lieutenant for the the Miami Metro Homicide Unit. In a mostly male-dominated field, she had to prove herself by outworking everyone else. She takes her job home with her, has no personal life to speak of, and has been rewarded for her dedication and police intuition with promotions to Detective and eventually Lieutenant for simultaneously busting asses and kicking them.

  • Saul Berenson, "Homeland"

There were heartbreaking moments and tense developments galore in this crackling Showtime thriller, but anchoring it all was a wonderfully soulful performance by Mandy Patinkin as the hard-working Saul. He talked Carrie down from her more manic places, and when that failed, he comforted her at her lowest moments -- all in addition to holding down a demanding job as a crucial CIA employee. One of the most indelible images of Season 1 was a scene of Saul using a ruler to spread peanut butter on some crackers, a late-night snack that reinforced the idea that those who often work hard to keep America safe not only don't get credit -- they don't even get dinner.

  • Leslie Knope, "Parks & Recreation"

You will not find a harder worker in the Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee. Heck, you probably won't find a more dedicated worker anywhere on TV. Leslie (Amy Poehler) spearheaded the Harvest Festival, saving Pawnee. She also tirelessly campaigned for a seat on the Pawnee City Council while continuing her work with the Parks Department. When she was suspended, she started her own citizen action league. You can take the Knope out of the office, but you can't take the work out of the Knope.

  • Tyrion Lannister, "Game of Thrones"

Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) wasn't exactly a hard-working guy when "Thrones" began, but over the course of two seasons, more and more responsibilities piled up on him, to the point where he hardly had time for bordellos and wine (the horror!). One of the most fascinating things about the HBO show is the way it's shown Tyrion -- who'd been underestimated and mostly dismissed by everyone (including himself) -- realize that he not only was good at wielding power, he actually liked it. But it certainly cuts into a guy's recreational time, as courtiers Varys and Littlefinger could have told him.

  • Alicia Florrick, "The Good Wife"

Is Alicia (Julianna Margulies) ever home? And when she's home, is her phone ever not within arm's reach? She always goes above and beyond for Lockhart/Gardner. This is her first job in years and Alicia has moved fast, climbing the corporate ladder with ease. Could it be Lockhart, Gardner & Florrick soon?

  • John Cooper, "Southland"

Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) is recovering from addiction problems, but he never lets his bad back stand in the way of doing his job as an LAPD officer. His troubled past (a criminal father, a failed marriage and his closeted sexuality) explains why he's so passionate about the job, and why he does it all with a sense of humor. "You're a cop because you don't know how not to be one. If you feel that way, you're a cop -- if you don't, you're not."

  • Kate Beckett, "Castle"

Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) has a lot on her plate -- the unsolved murder of her mother that drew her to the job and Castle, the man who wants to help her solve the case ... but not at the expense of her own safety. Her personal issues sometimes drive her to make emotional decisions in the field, but it just proves how much she really cares.

  • Sam and Dean Winchester, "Supernatural"

Plenty of people take their work home with them, but few let their jobs consume them as thoroughly as hunky, demon-hunting brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) have over seven seasons of "Supernatural." The family business of "saving people" and "hunting things" not only has them living in motels and out of Dean's trusty Impala, it's also seen them sent to Heaven, Hell and many dimensions in-between in the name of saving the world. If anyone deserves a vacation, it's these two hard-working heroes. Sadly for them, kicking ass and looking good is a full-time job.

  • Miranda Bailey, "Grey's Anatomy"

Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) could not be more dedicated to her job at Seattle Grace. When viewers first met her, she was the play-by-the rules resident of general surgery and referred to as "The Nazi" by her five surgical interns -- Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), George O'Malley (T.R. Knight) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) -- because she ruled with an iron first. But Bailey has since proven to have a soft heart, too. Her devotion to her job arguably cost her her marriage, but Bailey could never turn her back on the co-workers and patients at Seattle Grace, no matter how much stress and pressure she's under.

  • Kenneth Parcell, "30 Rock"

The constantly-cheerful NBC page (and former Southern farm boy) is one of the most dutiful employees we've ever seen on TV. Sure, Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) is incredibly awkward and sometimes annoyingly optimistic, but he also could not be more devoted to "TGS," NBC and television at large. After all, how many times have we seen him out of his page uniform?

  • Max Black, "Two Broke Girls"

One of the titular heroines of CBS' raunchy comedy, Max Black (Kat Dennings) seems to have tried her hand at just about every low-paying job in New York. She's also an excellent multitasker, balancing her burgeoning cupcake business with waitressing, nannying, cleaning, working as a department store Christmas elf, dog-sitting and wrangling her flaky roommate Caroline, to name a few. Someone give this poor broke girl a break!

  • Antoine Batiste, "Treme"

It's not easy being a working musician in New Orleans. Whether he's trying to wrangle together his own band or lugging his trombone all around town going from gig to gig, Antoine Batiste (Wendell Pierce) is always hustling. At his wife's urging, he picked up a side job as an assistant band leader at a local high school, which will give his family a steady stream of secondary income.

A lot of people shop with an attitude of, "If I want it, I buy it," says Mark Foster, director of education for Credit Counseling of Arkansas. "That's a recipe for disaster."

Instead, take a few minutes to figure out what you can safely spend this holiday season, from stamps to decorations to gifts. The amount may be smaller than you'd hoped, but so what?

Among "the people that we see who have the highest credit scores -- 750 and above -- we do see consistent behaviors in them that drive those scores," says Anthony Sprauve, spokesman for myFICO.com, a division of credit scoring company FICO. Things such as "not overspending, not running up their credit card bills."

You don't know how much you've already spent
You don't know how much you've already spent

If you don't know how much credit you've already burned through, it's time to stop and check, says Todd Mark, vice president of education for Dallas-based Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas.

"If someone asks you, 'How much have you spent so far?' and you can't tell," Mark says, "there's a good chance you're shopping beyond your budget."

Here's another way you'll know you're overspending: Your credit card bill is larger than expected.

"That probably tells you you're not paying close enough attention," Sprauve says. Think of that credit card balance as an early warning system. It can signal you to leave the cards at home, he says.

Balance exceeds 20 percent of credit line
Balance exceeds 20 percent of credit line

Your credit score is influenced by the amount of available credit in your name. Put too much on your credit card, and your credit score could drop.

    How much is too much?

The higher the balance in relation to your credit line, the more your score can suffer, Sprauve says. A debt-to-credit ratio of less than 20 percent is "the sweet spot."

FICO used to recommend using no more than 10 percent of available credit. It now considers anywhere below 20 percent a healthy target, Sprauve says. "Within the score, there is a very small difference between 10 percent and 20 percent," he says. And "20 percent is much more realistic for the average person."

You've spent more than you can pay off
You've spent more than you can pay off

When you've spent more than you can pay off, "that's a time to stop," Mark says. Realize "this isn't making sense."

The thrill you might get in shopping during the holidays is never worth the pain when your bill arrives in that third or fourth week of January, he says. "You're setting yourself up for a financial crisis."

Here are a few more signs, according to Mark, that you can't afford to pay off that bill in January.

    • You already have more credit card debt than you can afford.
    • Debts are keeping you up at night or stressing you or your family.
    • Card debt is impeding other life goals.
    • You're struggling just to make minimum payments.

Some consumers are in debt before the holidays even arrive. If that's the case, then "the last thing you want to do is say, 'Let's have one last hurrah, and we'll deal with it in January,'" Mark says.

You don't have an emergency fund
You don't have an emergency fund

Face it: Life is full of emergencies. And they usually come with a price tag.

So having a little cash cushion is not only smart, it's necessary.

Before you invest even a penny, "financial planners want to make sure the client has three to six months' of readily available cash to use for emergencies," says Andy Byron, financial adviser and partner with HC Financial Advisors in Lafayette, Calif.

So, if you're not ready to make money from interest, you're definitely not ready to rack up debt from credit card interest, he says.

In that case, Byron advises, do what shoppers did a generation ago: Use cash.

    Ovarian Cancer - Detection

There is no simple and reliable methods to detect ovarian cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms.

Screening involves testing to determine whether a disease before symptoms. The cancer screening tests are effective when they can detect the disease early.

Early detection of disease can lead to more effective treatment. Diagnostic tests are used when you have symptoms. The purpose of the tests is to determine, or diagnose the cause of the symptoms, and can also be used to screen individuals that are considered to have a high risk of cancer.

You can use the following tests and procedures:

Pelvic exam: An exam of the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and elrecto. The doctor or nurse inserts one or two lubricated, gloved finger into the vagina with the other hand while lightly pressing on the abdomen to feel the size, shape and position of the uterus and ovaries.

It also inserts a speculum into the vagina and the doctor or nurse can visually examine the vagina and cervix, and any signs of disease. Usually performs a Pap test or Pap smear. The doctor or nurse will also introduce a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to feel for lumps or ?reasanormales.

Pelvic exam. The doctor or nurse inserts one or two lubricated, gloved fingers into the vagina and presses on the lower abdomen with the other hand. This is done to feel the size, shape and position of the uterus and ovaries. We also review the vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes, and rectum.

Ultrasound: A procedure in which sound waves are bounced high energy (ultrasonic) entejidos or internal organs creating echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues called a sonogram. The picture can be printed for further analysis. It can unaecograf?a abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound.

Abdominal ultrasound. He spends a transducer connected to a computer on the surface of the abdomen. The ultrasound transducer bounces sound waves off internal organs and tissues to make echoes that form a sonogram (computer picture).

Transvaginal ultrasound. It is inserted into the vagina An ultrasound probe connected to a computer and moves smoothly to show different organs. The probe bounces sound waves off internal organs and tissues to make echoes that form a sonogram (computer picture).
CA-125 test: A test to measure the level of CA 125 in the blood. CA 125 is a substance released by cells in the bloodstream. An elevated CA 125 level is sometimes a sign of cancer or other condition.

Barium enema: A series of x-rays of the lower gastrointestinal tract. A liquid that contains barium (a metallic compound gray-white) in the rectum. The barium coats the lower gastrointestinal tract and x-rays taken.

Intravenous pyelogram (IVP): A series of x-rays of the kidneys, ureters and bladder to determine if the cancer has spread to these organs. Dye is injected into a vein. As the dye moves through the kidneys, ureters and bladder, x-rays are taken to determine if there are any blockages.

CT scan (CAT scan): A procedure that makes a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body, taken from different angles. The pictures are made by a computer linked to an x-ray machine It can be injected or given to drink a dye to help the organs or tissues show up more clearly. This procedure is also called computed tomography, computerized tomography, or computerized axial tomography.

Biopsy: The removal of cells or tissues for a pathologist to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer. The tissue is extracted by llamalaparotom?a a procedure (surgical incision made in the abdominal wall).

    It is recommended that:

Know your body so you can identify normal for you.
If you notice any changes in your body that is not normal for you and that may be a sign of ovarian cancer, talk to your doctor about possible causes, such as cancer.

GM buys back stock; taxpayers may lose billions

    11 hrs.

General Motors will repurchase 200 million shares of its own stock currently held by the U.S. Treasury, with the White House announcing plans to sell off its remaining 300 million shares within the next 12 to 15 months.

The automaker will pay?$27.50 for the shares it will acquire, a 7.9% premium over the $25.49 closing price on December 18, 2012 ? but that is also a sharp discount from the $33 price set during GM?s initial public offering in November 2010. And it means taxpayers will lose billions on the sale.

?This announcement is an important step in bringing closure to the successful auto industry rescue, it further removes the perception of government ownership of GM among customers, and it demonstrates confidence in GM?s progress and our future,? said Dan Akerson, chairman and CEO of GM.?

The Detroit Bureau:?GM Revealing new Cadillac ELR Plug-in at Detroit Auto Show

The automaker noted that it will take a $400 million charge against earnings during the fourth quarter in connection with the stock repurchase.

As recently as a week ago, during a holiday event with reporters, CEO Akerson indicated his desire to have the government sell off its stake ? though he gave no indication any move was imminent.? Most analysts had not expected an announcement until sometime in early 2013.

Treasury has been under strong pressure to announce an exit plan ? an issue that failed GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney repeated frequently during his campaign. He called on the White House to sell off its stake last summer, though at that point GM was trading as low as $18.72 a share.? At that price, the government would have received about $1.5 billion less than it will now get, a total of $5.5 billion for the initial 200 million share sell-off.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Toyota Pays Record Fine for Stonewalling Safety Recall

Industry analysts had estimated a sale price of $53 would be needed to recoup the government?s full investment in General Motors, however.?

Both sides have been looking for a way to sell off the government?s remaining stake in what Washington calls ?an orderly fashion.?? There was clear concern that simply dumping 500 million shares onto the market all at once would cause havoc ? and sharply depress GM?s stock price.

It is likely, insiders suggest, that the remaining 300 million shares will be sold off in chunks, rather than en masse, to minimize any market disruption.?

There is also clear hope that as the economy continues to improve ? and with auto sales expected to continue rebounding after a strong close to 2012 ? GM?s share price will continue its upward momentum.

There are some issues that continue to nag the automaker, however, most notably its ongoing problems in Europe, where it is expected to report a loss for all of 2012 running between $1.5 billion and $1.8 billion, it recently signaled.?

    The Detroit Bureau:?The World's Oldest Ford, a 1903 Model A, returns home

As part of the latest move, the government will remove some of the restrictions it had placed on General Motors as part of the 2009 bailout which ultimately totaled $49.5 billion.

While Akerson last week said the government had ?stayed out? of GM?s day-to-day management, contrary to some early concerns, he nonetheless chafed over limits the White House had placed on senior management salaries.? It also barred GM ? and Chrysler, which also received a 2009 bailout ? from owning corporate aircraft.

Salaries and bonuses will almost certainly rise to match those at competing makers, such as Ford, industry observers anticipate.? And GM could announce plans to acquire new jets within a matter of weeks.

The automotive bailout proved extremely controversial, far more than the much larger rescue of U.S. banks. GM officials have acknowledged that their research shows some potential buyers won?t purchase products from what has been derisively called ?Government Motors.?? It?s unclear if the planned sell-off of stock will overcome that aversion.

But the likely loss of billions of dollars by the time all government stock is sold off ? at the $27.50 share price, the ultimate loss would amount to around $12.75 billion ? will continue to fuel debate.

For their part, White House officials defended the bailout and the newly announced stock repurchase by pointing out the long-term benefits to the country.

"The auto industry rescue helped save more than a million jobs during a severe economic crisis," U.S. Treasury Assistant Secretary for Financial Stability Timothy Massad said. ?But (the rescue plan) was always meant to be a temporary, emergency program. The government should not be in the business of owning stakes in private companies for an indefinite period of time.?

India clears way for bigger foreign investment in banks

    NEW DELHI | Tue Dec 18, 2012 10:45pm IST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Lok Sabha cleared a path for more foreign investment in the banking sector by approving a bill to increase shareholders' voting rights, after dropping a controversial clause allowing banks to trade in commodity futures.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government is racing against the clock to pass reforms economists say are needed to breathe life into Asia's third-largest economy, which is headed for the worst year of growth in a decade.

Progress so far has been slow.

The banking bill is the only piece of major reform legislation to be passed in a parliament session again disrupted by protests and shouting matches. The session ends on Thursday.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told parliament the government was abandoning efforts to pass a bill this session to open India's cash-strapped insurance sector to foreign investment - a move eagerly watched by investors.

Another bill aimed at easing land acquisition for infrastructure and mining projects was also deferred to next year.

The banking bill will increase shareholders' voting rights to 26 percent from 10 percent in private sector banks, making investment more attractive to foreign players.

The bill will now move to the upper house of parliament for voting on Thursday, where it is also likely to be passed as it is backed by India's two biggest parties.

The legislation clears the way for more corporate houses to run banks by enabling the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to issue new bank licences. That will boost the government's drive to expand access to financial services in a country where more than half the 1.2 billion population is without a bank account.

"The raising of voting cap will have a positive impact in attracting funds as it will help foreign investors to have more say in banks," said Jagannadham Thunguntla, head of research at brokerage firm SMC Global Securities.

The main opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) threw its weight behind the bill after the government dropped a clause allowing banks to trade commodities futures amid fears it could lead to risky, speculative trading.

"It will lead to better investor interest in the smaller private sector banks. It is also a sentiment booster, and it will pave the way for the Reserve Bank of India to issue new banking licences," said Sujan Hajra, chief economist at Anand Rathi Securities in Mumbai.

    HAVING MORE SAY

India has struggled for years to reform and liberalise state-dominated sectors such as banking, insurance and pensions due to political opposition, including from within the ruling Congress party.

The banking bill will give the RBI greater regulatory oversight over local banks and the ability to overrule boards when the banks are facing financial difficulties. The RBI had demanded more oversight as a precondition to issuing new banking licences.

The bill also enables the government to raise voting rights in state banks such as the State Bank of India (SBI.NS) to 10 percent from just 1 percent now, acceding partially to foreign investors' demands to have more say in Indian banking.

The bank employees unions, reluctant that any control is ceded, have strongly opposed this move for years and are set to strike on Thursday in protest.

The bill will allow foreign banks to convert their Indian operations into local subsidiaries or transfer shareholding to a holding company of the bank without paying stamp duty.

Foreign banks have long sought these changes to the law which they say would encourage them to expand their operations in India. Under current laws, foreign banks such as Citibank (C.N) and Standard Chartered Plc (STAN.L) have to pay 20-30 percent tax as capital gains and stamp duty when transferring branches to a new legal entity.

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Dec 17, 2012 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Success will come much easier if you become knowledgeable in the techniques necessary to succeed as a multi-level marketing professional. In this article, you will find great advice regarding multilevel marketing to help you succeed.

Don?t let working online affect your efficiency. Whenever you are doing business on the internet, you may find that you can easily become sidetracked. Develop and fine-tune a schedule that will keep you attentive to your work.

If you try to take shortcuts with multilevel marketing, you could wind up making a mistake that will really cost you. Cutting corners might seem to save you time or money now, but the truth is that taking the time to work hard is the only way you will achieve long-term success. When you have chosen to create a quality work product, you will likely see great results.

TIP! Deciding that you should succeed is a great thing to do for network marketing. Treat it seriously, as though it were a physical storefront.

Do a monthly budget and stay with it. To create a more effective business plan, you must be aware of your financial resources and limitations. If you can, make a strong investment to see profits sooner.

A common guideline is to multiply monthly expenditures by nine; the result is said to be the amount needed for an emergency. Multi-level marketing is great for providing that additional income and more!

To be successful with MLM, you have to be a leader. It can really pay off to tap into your creativity and offer something different and unique. Your unique approach will capture the attention of customers and competition alike. Do not imitate someone, go the extra mile to create your own niche.

TIP! Network marketing can be used to have people from your business go out and build your network with new business partners. Your business will see increased success if you are able to successfully bring together a group of highly skilled marketers that network for you.

Join online communities about network marketing to learn from other online business owners. You can get a lot of free tips about multilevel marketing from online forums related to the subject. Try to spend an hour or so on a forum daily learning from others and sharing your own experiences.

It?s a good idea to learn from successful people in your business that you admire. When you follow the leaders, you will be less likely to make the same mistakes they did.

There are lots of people who have the desire to share the things that they?ve learned in multilevel marketing, that is why it is important that you are always ready to listen to what they have to say. A great way you can do this is by listening to podcasts. You may find something quite worthwhile to you if you just take the time to sample listen to some.

TIP! Consider having tutorials available on your website. Providing clear, easy-to-follow tutorials and how-tos can boost traffic and encourage visitors to spend more time perusing your site.

A good tool for success in MLM is neural-linguistic programming. Alternatively, when you are trying to close a sale with a client, include various ?you? statements. ?

Having a vision board will let you focus on achieving concrete goals through network marketing. What exactly would you like to achieve through the business? Would you like to purchase an expensive gift for yourself like a big house, a nice care or a boat?

As with most businesses, the quality you produce is more important than the quantity. The more dedicated your downline is, the more both you and they will profit.

TIP! You should develop a well thought out business plan, but be sure to be flexible in the face of unexpected developments. You should make the list of everything that needs to be done and narrow it down to what is essential and what you have the time to do.

Focus your network marketing efforts towards new clients rather than friends and family, as this will bring new money into your circle. The ultimate goal in any multi-level marketing business is to sell more stuff, which requires finding new customers. Don?t just use people that you know and depend on them in multilevel marketing as this will limit your possibility for growth. Reaching out to clients outside of your inner circle can really open up a whole new world of possibilities.

A blog is a great way to keep returning customers excited about your products. They will appreciate that and will be more likely to do business with you in the future. It?s also possible to use your blog to create articles that generate interest in some of your products and/or services.

TIP! Attract people with discounts. Choose a network marketing company who provides coupons for the items you?ll be selling.

As discussed earlier, successful multilevel marketing stems from a combination of knowledge and application. If you know your target market, you can truly benefit your business through network marketing programs. The more you use proven multilevel marketing techniques, the more quickly your message will get out to the public.

Feeling Guilty About Inappropriate Sexual Feelings | Ask the Therapist

As a boy my grandfather took pictures on me naked and in my underwear and had lots of verbal abuse from my father. I don?t remember any other abuse, but all I remember is undressing in front of my grandfather while taking pictures of me. I don?t blame my father for his verbal actions as his father probably did worse to him. I?ve come to understand a humans? actions and why things are ?passed on?. I came to realize my condition when I was maybe 14 or 15. I considered suicide at 16 and was very close to it. Making a date, time, and place was as close as I got, fortunately. I?m 23 now. Haven?t committed a crime. NEVER have touched a boy and NEVER have thought about doing it. In fact, I don?t even have a traffic ticket. I?m around many children and DO NOT have the urge to do anything rational. I?m honest, kind, and willing to go the extra mile to help others. I know my condition needs attention and I?m willing to get help so I can live a happier life.

My condition is not only an attraction to younger boys around 9 or 10 but I?m also attracted to disposable diapers. Specifically younger boys wearing diapers. I?ve always been interested in diapers, looking at the packages in the diaper aisle at the grocery store as a child. Going to the store when I was old enough to buy them. Secretly wearing them on my own time. Maybe it was because I wet the bed as a child? I?m not sure, but nothing has changed for me and that?s a problem. Not the diapers but the underage part. I can live with diapers.. I can?t live with the fact that I am attracted to younger boys. I?m beginning to think suicide is the right answer. I so want a normal life with a normal relationship. Maybe have kids some day and pass on my human experiences. I just don?t see it happening. Feelings are strong and chiseled into my brain. There is no way of making them disappear. I?m very reserved and sad all the time. It?s not natural and wish for a solution?

Is there anything you suggest for me. I feel like these feelings I have will be the death of me soon if I don?t act.

    A. Many people your age or older are confused about sexuality. They don?t understand arousal and why they are attracted to certain people or objects. If you were to study human sexuality, you?d see that throughout history people have been aroused by unusual things.

One cannot consciously control what arouses them. If so, then it would be easy for a homosexual person to be heterosexual or for a heterosexual person to be homosexual.

Many people are aroused by and even masturbate to fantasies of things that they would never do. Most fantasies go no further than the confines of the mind.

Individuals who have been sexually abused as children often repeat that abuse as adults. Though you are attracted to young boys, you have never abused or harmed anyone. That is important to acknowledge. It is very commendable.

This problem falls in the realm of sex therapy. Sexual therapists study and deal with complex sexual issues. You should make an appointment with a sex therapist. Sex therapists are not judgmental. They understand the range of human sexual feelings. Sex therapy is very effective.

The guilt about your feelings is making you depressed. It is likely causing your suicidal thoughts. If you feel that you might harm yourself, then go to the hospital immediately.

Almost everyone who has attempted suicide and survived was glad that they had survived. Why? Because later their problems were solved. Your problems can also be solved. You are an excellent candidate for sex therapy. I hope you will consider it. Please take care.
